The global market for telecoms smart cards, for 3G/GSM/RUIM, continues to grow with new opportunities both geographically and technologically. The larger players are expanding globally, pushing into rapidly growing markets such as China. While these markets offer large sales opportunities, they also reflect a larger change in the direction of the card vendors.
While the vendors continue to provide the core card, they are now focusing more and more effort on the supporting software and services. Vendors are reporting drops in their average selling price per card, but the new focus on the supporting software and services has meant they can continue to increase their overall revenues from the telecoms sector.
Technology developments and the vendor’s greater focus on software and services have given them a fantastic opportunity to lever their cross technology knowledge and move up the value chain. Card vendors can now provide the SWP enabled 3G USIM and the supporting infrastructure behind the scenes, from the required EMV applications through to the card readers, the SWP supporting POS terminals and the back office OTA servers to manage the applications.
These developments have meant that the customer can simplify their systems around a fewer vendors, but it places a greater reliance on each vendor to get it right. The customer expects products from a single vendor to work seamlessly together, be installed with the minimum of fuss, and work first time, every time. To ensure customer satisfaction the vendor has to increase the level of their internal testing, ensuring all problems are found and addressed long before the product gets to the customer. The vendor not only needs to improve the testing of each individual constituent, they also have to increase their interoperability testing which will no longer be carried out by the customer.
